To Kick start our Growing and Life-cycles Topic, we began by sowing and planting a range of vegetables, fruit tress and herb plants in our Foundation Garden so we could watch them grow over time. When they were ready for harvesting, the children had the opportunity to pick their own vegetables, herbs and fruits to taste! Yummy!
Life-cycle of a Beanstalk
After reading the story "Jack and the Beanstalk", the children investigated just how fast a beanstalk could grow by creating our own greenhouses. We planted a Bean inside our green house and recorded the changes each week in our Beanstalk Diaries.
STEM Week - Parts of the Plant
For STEM Week the children investigated and named the different parts of a plant and their functions. We conducted an experiment using green water and tissue paper to find out just how water travels up the stem of a plant.
Life-cycle of a Butterfly
The children watched and observed the life-cycle of a butterfly. Our caterpillars grew bigger and bigger, until they eventually made their own chrysalis. Then one day they emerged into beautiful butterflies and when they were ready, we released the butterflies in our garden to begin the lifecycle again next year!
