Summer

Summer 1 - Dragons, Castles and Knights (China focus)

Our topic for the Summer Term is Dragons, Castles and Knights (China focus). We will be comparing castles in the UK and China and exploring what the purpose of a castle is. We will also be learning about the importance of the Chinese Dragon and the history of this symbol.

English

Our text will be Grandad's Island by Benji Davies. Syd loves Grandad. Grandad loves Syd. And that will never change. This beautiful book shows how those who are dear to us remain near to us - however far away they may seem.

Maths

Maths will be taught discretely. We will be looking at multiplication and division and moving onto fractions and shape.

We will continue to regularly recap addition and subtraction as part of our Daily 10.

Science

Science will be taught discretely. We will continue our journey of exploring plants and what they need to grow. We will also be exploring uses of everyday materials.

MTP Summer 1 2022

English

In English we have been writing in the past tense about what is in Grandad’s attic.
Listen to the children share their amazing writing with the whole class.

Reading

Year 2 have thoroughly been enjoying the selection of new books to read in our new reading garden. From comics, chapter books to cook books, there is something for everyone!
Take a look at the photos below.

Science

Year 2 have been conducting a science experiment. We had to find out what material would be suitable to clean up a spillage of water. The three materials were paper, tinfoil and tissue. We began by predicting which materials we thought would and would not absorb the water. We then discussed how to make it a fair test, we needed to use the same amount of water and material on each table. It was great fun learning which materials were suitable!

Maths

In maths, we have been identifying and describing equal groups. To ensure we understand what an equal group is, we used concrete resources to represent the equal groups. We then went outside and were told to show different equal groups for example; show me three equal groups with two in each group. We did this by organising ourselves into different groups. We then called out what the multiplication sentence was for example; 3 x 2 = 6.

Listen to one of our fabulous Year 2 children explain why sharing eleven into three equal groups of four will not work.

Art

In Art, we have been learning about Andy Goldsworthy. We have been learning who he is, the type of art and sculptures he has created and what materials he used. We began by drawing some of his sculptures to understand and explore the shape of them and what natural materials we think he has used to create his master pieces. We then used some chalk and went outside to create some drawings of his sculptures on the ground before we begin to make our own sculptures. Take a look!
