Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Year 2 are taught by Mrs Fawcett (Mon-Thu) and Mrs Moores (Fri) with morning TA support from Mrs Cadman.

Please click on the Spring tab below to see the learning that will take place this term.

📚 Home Learning

Reading:

Reading records and books are checked and changed on a Monday morning by Mrs Cadman (we cannot change books outside this time). Please aim to read with your child at least 4 times a week and record it in their reading record books. Children who record reading 4 times a week will receive Dojo’s as a reward. Please ensure your child is bringing in their reading folder every day. Children can choose to read other books alongside their given school books to help them develop a love for reading.

In school, your child will take part in structured reading sessions where they read a text and answer comprehension questions to build up their understanding of different texts. In addition to this, children will also listen their teacher read so they can understand fluency and expression and they will repeat the given text. Each day, your child has 10 minutes of free reading time to enjoy a book of their choice. If your child has a favourite book from home, they are more than welcome to bring it in to read during this time.

Phonics/Spelling:

During the Spring/Summer term children will be moving on from the Little Wandle ‘Bridge to Spelling’ onto their ‘Spelling Programme’.

Examples of Year 2 Spelling Focus:

  • Sounds: 'kn'/'gn' for /n/, 'wr' for /r/, 'j' sound spelt 'j', 'g', 'dge'.
  • Patterns: When to use 'k' or 'ck', 'ch' or 'tch'.
  • Suffixes: Rules for adding -s, -es, -ed, -ing, -er, -est, and -y (dropping 'e', doubling consonants).

How it Works:

  • Lessons build on phonics knowledge with familiar structures.
  • Focus is on understanding rules and patterns, not just rote memorisation for tests.
  • Children learn to think about spelling by considering sound, meaning, and grammar.

For parents, resources on the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds website provide guidance on supporting your child's learning at home.

Some children may need more time to secure their phonics knowledge before moving onto spellings. These children will continue to take part in daily phonics lessons matched to the phase they are currently working at. They will also receive Precision Teaching sessions to give them additional, targeted support to strengthen their reading and spelling skills.

At the start of the year your child went home with a list of common Year 1 & 2 spellings. This is for your reference to help track which words your child can read and write. Every couple of weeks, please review the list with your child and help them see how many words they can confidently tick off.

Maths:

During the Spring term we will continue to look at number bonds within 100 (addition and subtraction) and arithmetic questions.  Weekly maths home learning will support this by practising arithmetic question. There are many songs that can help your child remember different number bonds (these can be found on the BBC webpage Super Movers). To reinforce learning at home, we also recommend using Hit the Button on the Top Marks website – a fun and engaging game that encourages both accuracy and speed. We've also been enjoying the Farmer Pete song in class, which challenges the children to keep up with the pace while recalling their number bonds correctly.

Please see the homework tab below for more information.

Please see the downloadable guides below to support reading, writing and maths at home.

Thank you for your continued support in helping your child reach their full potential. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child's learning further, please don't hesitate to grab us for a chat at the end of the day.

🏃🏼 PE

PE days are Mondays and Tuesdays during Spring 1 Term. The children should wear their PE kits to school on these days.
